2006 FME INTERNATIONAL User Conference

Exploring the Possibilities

Our very first User Conference was held in Vancouver, BC at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue in September 2006. More than 75 GIS users and spatial data managers attended from 16 countries. Based on the theme, "Exploring the Possibilities", the conference provided participants the opportunity to develop their skills and explore the diverse capability of Safe Software’s world-leading spatial data transformation technology. The keynote was presented by Mark Sondheim and Peter Friesen from the Integrated Land Management Bureau of the Government of British Columbia.

FME Idol

FME IdolCongratulations to the first ever FME Idol Winners, Jason Birch and Peter Laulund! Look for Jason and Peter's first single to be released in the coming weeks. As for the contest itself, which consisted of the four FME MVP contestants solving one of two problems in front of a live audience in under an hour, here's how the contestants fared:

Jason Birch – Successfully decoded some FME steganography External Link and output to KML (myKML.kml) using Workbench (data.zip).

Peter Laulund – Solved the same problem as Jason did, but used mapping files and Tcl, AND used a North American keyboard.  So who says Workbench is more productive than mapping files? (data_laulund.zip)

SRG – Attempted making a map showing the spatial distribution of the conference attendees starting with a complex input text file of geocoded cities, the attendee city list, and a German/English country map.  After the contest was over, SRG stayed up until 3AM and solved the problem. (Challenge1-SRG.kml, data_srg.zip)

Hans van der Maarel – Attempted the same problem as SRG.  Good efforts Hans!

If you'd like to try the FME Idol Challenges yourself at home, checkout the following powerpoint and available datasets. (FME_Idol.ppt, Challenge_1.zip, Challenge_2.zip)
